He now makes his home in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. The author of twelve books of poetry and four books of prose, David Whyte holds a degree in marine zoology and has traveled extensively, including living and working as a naturalist guide in the Galapagos Islands and leading anthropological and natural history expeditions in the Andes, Amazon, and Himalaya.
He brings this wealth of experience to his poetry, lectures, and workshops. I've listened to this talk at least fifty times, and still now every time I listen it softens me and melts me into myself. Whyte uses both his own poetry and that of others to delve into that space between us and our self-doubt, us and our faith in ourselves and the world.
This talk is absolutely shattering and I highly, highly recommend it. I wish I had listened to this cd years ago. David has an incredible gift for sharing poetry in a way that reaches our hearts. Through poetry, he is able to help me better understand how to find my more genuine and authentic self. I also listen every 6 months or so, and each time I am encouraged and strengthened in my own journey of self-compassion and acceptance.
These words inform my life on a daily basis--thank you, David.

David whyte poems of self compassion: On The Poetry of Self Compassion,
Highly recommend to anyone who is looking for more inward compassion, love and acceptance. My spiritual director gave me a copy of this CD after a particularly signficant conversation, and I only listened to it because I knew he would be asking me about it. I'm a story person. I rarely read poetry, and when I do I tend to read too quickly to get the full effect.
This CD helped me understand just how much I miss. I was surprised and delighted by Whyte's reading and interpretation of these poems, including one of my few favorites, Kingfishers Catch Fire. His passionate, engaged style brings out the vital life behind the words on the page, and his commentary is illuminating. His personal story about his encounter with a rickety bridge in the Himalayas is worth the price of the CD all by itself.
To be honest, I'm not sure that "self compassion" is the message I took from this talk, but there was a lot of valuable inspiration about engagement with life, which I have sorely needed lately. When this book came to on a cassette from my sister through my aunt, I trusted it immediately simply based in knowing them. How could I have know, or they, that it would change my life and that I would replay it until the inevitable tape tangle, and then replay in my mind having listened so often.
The clincher: only one side played properly! Imagine where it will take me 20 years later during another growth spurt of self awareness and God willing, compassion. Cocoa by candlelight. I invite everyone to read this in a contemplative way. Take your time. This is the sort of book that needs time to work on you, like water slowly carving rock.
I would write more, but I need to stay silent and appreciate the feeling of having read this and being fortunate enough to carry it with me for the rest of my life. I have a copy of this talk and listen to it over and over, whenever I need a reminder to be kind to myself. David Whyte is one of my very favorite poets and writers of prose.
I love poetry and he has a way of weaving it into self exploration in a way that speaks to me so deeply. And I love how he celebrates other poets and uses their work as well as his own in this talk.
