Abby kelley foster biography

The slanders against Abby Kelley abated when she married radical abolitionist Stephen Symonds Foster inwhen she was in her mid-thirties. Abby gave birth to their daughter, Alla, in Her letters show that she agonized over her selfishness at wanting to be with her daughter when so many slave women had their babies torn from their arms and never saw them again.

She and Stephen worked out an unusual relationship for the times, though, as he often took care of Alla while she lectured. Unlike the famous gathering at Seneca Falls, New York, which attracted only local attendances, the Worcester meeting had representatives from nine states, and its message soon spread internationally. Despite constant harassment and intense ridicule Abby never compromised her principles and her belief that all people are created equal and deserve to be free.

Some male members of the Society objected to the ideas propounded by Garrison, Kelley, and other radicals. As a result, when Kelley was elected to the national business committee of the Anti-Slavery Society, conservative members left in protest. The two groups of abolitionists officially severed. Garrison, accompanied by Charles Lenox Remond, arrived late and sat in protest with the American women delegates who had not been seated or given the opportunity to participate. Lucretia Mott, a delegate, and Elizabeth Cady Stantona spectator, were among them. In Abby Kelley arrived in Seneca Falls for a week-long series of speeches intended to convert as many souls as she could to the anti-slavery cause.
